Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel is nothing short of a fairytale. Think textures that stand out, life size plants, and references to the past, while acknowledging its place in the present and future of fashion. This fall/winter 2026 couture show, titled “Gaby and the Beanstalk” proved that fables and fashion have more in common than one might assume.
It’s worth noting that Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel debut was highly anticipated. In June 2024, Virginie Viard, who was once described as Karl Lagerfeld’s “right arm and left arm” left Chanel.
It wasn’t until December 2024 where the luxury house had chosen their “saviour”. Arguably, assuming the role of artistic director at any designer label is a challenge in itself. Though Blazy had experience with high end, he worked at Bottega Veneta.
Blazy, being only the fourth designer in Chanel’s history, had high expectations placed on him. Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2026 show was nothing short of a phenomenon. Planets and stars surrounded the ceilings. Elements of familiarity were evident (blazers, fringe, and pearls), but he transformed tradition with present ideals of fashion (movement and fluidity.) Ultimately, Blazy was met with a standing ovation.

Blazy continues to blend past and present, as evident in Gaby and the Beanstalk. Looks featured well-known children’s stories “Puss in Boots” and “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”. Also, The Wizard of Oz’ iconic scarecrow was represented in three looks. Shoes were embellished in gold-leaf and eggs. Minaudières of beans and bears could also be found. A defining look were the bean-shaped pearl high heels. Proving this collection was equal parts beanstalk and catwalk friendly.
As Chanel brides are a couture convention, Blazy defied this “and did not end the show with a wedding dress. Instead, he sent out a Little Black Dress”. Coco Chanel never married. It’s fair to assume that this was deliberate on Blazy’s behalf. It’s proof that fairytale endings look different for everyone.
